When Val first suggested illustrating a map for our bee book, a whole barrage of images filled my mind. I had a list of keywords, the four seasons and a honey bee willing to travel 3km to forage from around a hundred flowers each time!
But where on earth would this map start and end?
Maps help us to find things and this map would show us where a bee might travel to forage.
Bees can navigate in all sorts of ways (more on this later) but one way is through shades of colour and landmarks - so the map for our book would show flowers across the seasons and capture the changing colours of the landscape.
The map shown below is an early draft - the finished illustrations will invite the imagination to wander over a patch of countryside in wonder at an average bee's busy travels in search of food.
